Biography

Throughout a diverse range of professional careers my pre-occupation with making things has always found a place. Now, finally I have the opportunity (and the courage) to give this recurring and overriding interest my full attention.

Having spent an intensive year gaining a qualification in fine art and contemporary craft, I was exposed to the techniques of well-known and respected artists. Beginning with the basics of drawing through to a range of mediums included painting, glass making, ceramics and sculpture. This exploration into a wide range of styles, has given me the confidence to mix materials for my compositions and to develop my own techniques.

Having spent an 18 year period as a Maritime Archaeologist, my works are heavily influenced by the cultures of the countries I have worked in – Thailand, Maldives, China and Sri Lanka. I am drawn to the patinas of surfaces, of the used, worn everyday and decorative items of those cultures. The range of religions and in particular the decoration of their places of worship has had a lasting inspirational effect on me. The highly decorative Islamic style, shapes and patterning have inspired my architectural sculptures. Sculptural pieces seem to begin with a narrative, such as the mixed media storyboard entitled “The Journey Forward”. This was prompted by the Tampa refugee fiasco. I wanted to show these people in a different light to that portrayed by the media and politicians. A proud and beautiful people, who are travelling in hope of a new and safe environment, they carry a rich and significant culture with them.

After a surprisingly good reception to my work at my first exhibition (Kidogo - November 2007), I have felt encouraged to stretch further. I am currently working to incorporate kiln formed glass into my ceramic sculptures and to “mix the media” up a bit. It is a delight to work in the studio space at SODA - North Fremantle, working amongst such an enthusiastic group of artists.
