Soda Forest Retreat

Hamelin Bay Western Australia
Braeside Forest Retreat is the remote rural campus of SODA. Visiting artists have the option to research, make their own work or simply enjoy the inspirational natural surroundings at Braeside during their visit. Nestled amongst 3.5 acres of pristine Karri Eucalypt Forest, Braeside is four and a half hours drive south of Perth. Situated in the South Western corner of Western Australia, which is best known for viticulture and big surf, Braeside is also a great venue to facilitate large hands-on outdoor workshops.

The forest is home to the pale-barked (third tallest trees in the world) that reach heights of 60m or more. The Boranup Forest is about a 100km east of the main karri belt and is separated by grey infertile sand. One unique aspect of the forest is that these karri trees grow in limestone based soils where as in the main karri belt the trees grow in deep rich red clay soil.

Hamelin Bay is located 30 km's south of Margaret River. The wide sandy bay with a rocky headland has clean, clear waters offering safe swimming, beach fishing, snorkeling, wreck and cave diving and boating year round. The beautiful white beach stretches around the bay and is sprinkled with beautiful shady old peppermint trees. Hamelin Bay is home to friendly stingrays which are huge in size and number and love to swim with snorkelers and congregate around the boat ramp for fishermen's scraps. If you stand ankle deep in the water they swim across your feet.
